The Shoah, more commonly known as the Holocaust, was a genocide resulting in the death of millions of Jews, as well as thousands of non Jews, a total of two thirds of the Jews in Europe were killed. Adolf Hitler, chancellor of Germany at the time, and his Nazi regime were the main perpetrators of this tragic event, taking place in Nazi Germany and other German-occupied territories.
World War II first began in 1939, sparking the genocide beginning in 1941 and ending in 1945. In 1935, the German government passed the Nuremberg Laws. These laws excluded Jews from civil society, or the freedoms that we take for granted here in the US, such as freedom of speech.
In 1933, a network of concentration camps was established, and ghettos, or slums created to hold excess Jews, were created after World War II broke out.
Around two million Jews were killed by specialized units called Einsatzgruppen, often taking place in mass shootings. By the end of 1942, victims were regularly being transported to extermination camps where they were killed in gas chambers, if they survived the strenuous journey. These murders continued until the end of World War II in early May, 1945
